Kickoff Event: Native Youth Reading Challenge

Native Youth Reading Challenge & Kickoff Event: Daybreak Star

We are excited to announce that Native students at Licton Springs K-8 may have the opportunity to participate in a year-long cultural and educational program in partnership with the United Indians of All Tribes Educators Consortium (UIATEC) and United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF). This program is designed to empower Native youth through reading and community engagement.

Kickoff Event: Daybreak Star
Date: October 18
Our self-identifying Native pre-K through 5th grade students have the opportunity to visit Daybreak Star Cultural Center, where they will spend two hours paired with high school mentors for near-peer mentorship and cultural learning. This event also marks the official start of the Native Youth Reading Challenge, which encourages students to read books by Native authors and participate in community events. Students can log their reading digitally or on paper, with a goal to collectively reach 1 million points!

We are seeking assistance from families to arrange round-trip transportation for Licton Springs students to and from Daybreak Star.
There will be enough chaperones on-site, but we are asking for support in getting students there and back. If you're able to assist, please let us know! Email pto4thunderbirds@gmail.com.

More About the Native Youth Reading Challenge
Modeled after the Global Reading Challenge, students will track their reading through the Beanstalk app and join in monthly progress updates. The challenge culminates in March with a celebration of achievements.

Check out the recommended reading lists from Seattle Public Library to get started:

Let’s inspire our students to read, learn, and connect through this amazing initiative!
